Obama Appointed WHO as USDA Research Director??!!

You have GOT to be kidding me....when will the revolving door between industry and politics finally close??? Obama appointing Catherine Woteki, as the USDA's undersecretary for research, education, and economics. This is horrible news because Woteki comes to her new position after a five-year stint as global director of scientific affairs for Mars, Inc., the multinational junk-food giant.

How are we supposed to trust the USDA??? Not that I ever did. Certainly not with a food pyramid that looks like this. And to think that one is being recommended to diabetics?! My food pyramid looks a lot more like this one, from Mark's Daily Apple, waaaaay better. I feel better just looking at it. For real though.

The butcher at Whole Foods gave me a funny look today when I asked for beef heart. I guess no one eats it. People do buy it for dog food though. That's great news for me as he was happy to give it to me for free! Score! Free grassfed beef heart! And they'll grind it for you too. I told him he'll be seeing a lot more of me. He told me that the other butcher guy might charge me for it.....a whole $1.49/lb! Woohoo. I can totally do that.

What do I do with it you ask? Well.....I mix it with grassfed ground beef or buffalo stew meat and I make it into a thick meaty chili. Since it has been summer I haven't been making chili....but I have been mixing it with ground buffalo at a 1:1 ratio and dehydrating it as extruded beef jerky. Extremely delish. Extremely nutrish. Hm, I don't see beef heart on that USDA Food Pyramid, do you?

So now I will be participating in the Real Food for Real Budgets Challenge from The Nourished Kitchen!
I am REALLY looking forward to learning about how I can manage our budget and keep costs low. I just know that there will be a ton of great ideas from The Nourished Kitchen's readers! I'll update here what each challenge is and what I learn.....

Well here I am world. I think this will be sort of like my extended Facebook life. I'll post on things I learn, photos I take, recipes I cook and article/books/studies I read. For now I know no one is reading this, but I'm gonna send this link to my sister, so hopefully I'll have one reader. :)
